Daniel Island Overview
Just across the harbor from charming Historic Charleston South Carolina lies Charleston’s Island town, Daniel Island. These four thousand acres of coastal treasure is blessed with over 23 miles of rivers and streams and hundreds of acres of parks and shoreline. Once a private hunting and fishing retreat for one of America’s most influential families, the island is now home to almost 20,000 Charlestonians. Homeowners can choose from a wide variety of housing options from one-bedroom condos to mansions along scenic Ralston Creek. A vibrant downtown commercial and shopping district serves as a hub for this active community that still honors its philanthropic past.
Daniel Island’s earliest recorded history begins with the Etiwan Indian Tribe who hunted, fished and farmed on this fertile land before the first colonists arrived. In the 17th Century, the property was bestowed to Robert Daniell and became Daniel Island in 1740. The island served mostly agricultural uses until 1947 when it was purchased by the Guggenheim family for a hunting retreat and to raise cattle. Upon Harry Frank Guggenheim’s passing in 1971 stewardship was passed to the Guggenheim Foundation. It would be over twenty years before development would begin following in Harry’s master plan footsteps. Annexed by the City Of Charleston in 1991, construction of the first neighborhoods soon started.
Today Daniel Island is recognized as the premier community in the Charleston area. The island has numerous awards for excellence including the Urban Land Institute’s “Award for Excellence.” Located just off Route 526 it seems like you can get anywhere in and around Charleston within twenty minutes. Popular locations easily accessed in 15-20 minutes include the beaches of the Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, Charleston Airport, Mount Pleasant and, of course, Historic Charleston. Daniel Island provides a great place to raise children with some of the highest rated schools in the state. It’s easy to see why Daniel Island homes have become such a hot commodity. The easy living island vibe and world-class amenities are attracting buyers from around the globe. Abundant entertainment options and recreational venues are found within easy reach of the 10 neighborhoods.
Daniel Island Neighborhoods
The island is made up of 10 neighborhoods. Each is distinctive and interconnected by the bicycle paths to wind for about 12 miles through the island. The streets are narrow and most homes have full front porches. The city has been awarded the "Friendliest City In The World" and the front porches are no exception. Open a bottle of wine in the early evening and soon you will be chatting with neighbors about the days' activities.
As one might imagine, starting out a day in a community with so many amenities presents residents a wealth of possibilities. Rather than wonder what there is to do, the challenge is what will have to be put off until tomorrow. Assuming for a moment that it might be Saturday or a day off from work, what does a Daniel Island resident have in store on an average day?
Many islanders begin their day with some level of exercise. Early risers will find the streets occupied by bicyclists, runners, joggers, and dog walkers. Tennis courts are busy with players of every level while golfers at the Daniel Island Club head out for a world-class links experience. Island health clubs can be a good way to get some exercise or maybe today its yoga instead. The breakfast crowd will fill the tables at Honeycomb Café or Blondie’s where discussions might cover the latest good read or who has the best landscape. Maybe its breakfast with the family and coffee on your own back porch. The kids will soon be on the streets and trails on their bicycles, off to school or to shoot buckets in Etiwan Park. Hop in the golf cart and knock out the errands. Shopping, banking, dry cleaners, and the pharmacy are all accomplished from the same parking spot less than 5 minutes from home. There is probably still time before lunch to make the free college-level humanities class at the Berkeley County Library.
The island is an incredibly friendly place so lunch might mean meeting a friend at Laura Albert’s outdoor courtyard for a great salad and a glass of wine or a burger and a beer at the Daniel Island Grill. Better yet, it’s a sandwich on the dock while you gas up the boat for a bit of fishing. If your workplace is on the island a stop in to handle a few calls might be in order. With virtually no travel time the interruption is barely noticeable.
By late afternoon the focus begins to shift to the social side of island living. If it is a Thursday the Daniel Island Farmers Market is in full swing along Daniel Island Drive. This is a great place to grab some delicious handmade cheeses or pastas as well as the freshest vegetables available. By now it might be time to stop by the free Daniel Island Business Association Happy Hour, attend a wine tasting at Sauer Grapes Wine Shop or down a few oysters at the Daniel Island Grill. Dinner might end up being at one of more than 20 eateries in Downtown Daniel Island or a meal prepared at home from those tasty Farmers Market purchases.
The evening is full of options. There might be a kids' concert sponsored by the HOA in a nearby park, a community cruise leaving from the dock, a Battery semi-pro soccer match or an outdoor movie in MUSC Health Stadium. There is still time to join your friends and neighbors at one of the popular watering holes before calling it a day. So for tomorrow will it be swimming, kayaking, music lessons, a nature walk, picnic or maybe a couple of hours on the beach?
