Volvo Stadium- Each year the world’s finest women tennis professionals come to compete in the Volvo Cars Open World Tennis Association Tournament. Some of the past winners are Venus and Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Sabine Lisicki. The facility is often used as a concert venue treating audiences to celebrity performers like Willie Nelson, Sugarland, Train, The Beach Boys and Darius Rucker. The annual Hootie and the Blowfish concert is always a sellout. While there is plenty of free parking but local islanders ride their bikes or hop in the golf car to get there.
MUSC Health Stadium- Talk about family fun! This stadium is home to the Charleston Battery, the hometown soccer club. The Daniel Island School is among the highest rated schools in the state. The current schools are listed in order with a new high school coming just off the island in the fall of 2017.
Daniel Island Academy-ages 1-5 This school prepares the youngest students for kindergarten and beyond. Located in Downtown Daniel Island the school is accredited by NAYEC, The National Assoc. for the Education of Young Children. Staffed by friendly and caring professionals it serves as a springboard for children entering the education system.
Daniel Island School- Grades K-8 190,000 square feet located on Daniel Island Drive near the Berkeley County Library. This school, opened in 2006, is now home to more than 1200 students. The student to Certified Teacher Ratio is 23:1 and the school is Advance ED Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This school has been recognized by the Educational Oversight Committee with Gold or Silver Awards 7 years in a row and is rated exemplary in Language, math and science curriculums. The school mascot is the Osprey. Hundreds of students ride bicycles to school daily making for a colorful display on the school lawn. It’s a refreshing step back in time to be sure.
Bishop England High School- Grades 9-12. Bishop England High school moved to Daniel Island from downtown Charleston in 1998. The school was the recipient of an enormous tract of land, some 40 acres, donated by the Guggenheim Trust. In the spirit of “if you build it they will come” Bishop England is now the largest private high school in the state of South Carolina. Known for their prowess in athletic competitions the school enjoys an impressive academic standing too. The “Battling Bishops” can be found across the street from Etiwan Park.
Hanahan High- Grades 9-12. Pending the completion of Philip Simmons High School, Daniel Island Park high school students attend classes at Hanahan. Located about 10 minutes away this school is part of the Berkeley County School District. Opened in 1958 the school has experienced constant growth and has undergone several additions and a rebuild to accommodate swelling attendance numbers. Attendance in 2015 was 1057 students. The school is a sports powerhouse with numerous state and regional championships. The last Daniel Island Park students to attend Hanahan High School will be in the fall of 2016. Philip Simmons High School- Grades 9-12 Philip Simmons was a noted Charleston artist who worked his craft in iron. Examples of his work can be seen on the gates of hundreds of homes in the historic district. There are installations of his work at the Charleston Visitor Center and at the Charleston Airport. The school is scheduled to open for classes in the fall of 2017 and will encompass some 214,000 square feet. At a cost of $70 million it will be the largest school in the Berkeley County School District. The school is being constructed on land once again donated by the Guggenheim Trust.
Daniel Island Park is conveniently located on the north side of Daniel Island. It seems like you can get just about anywhere in Charleston via 526 in no more than 20 minutes. Area beaches of Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms are 15-20 minutes and the Charleston airport is usually about 15 minutes.
