Last night at the Gaillard Performance Center, I was overwhelmed with Songs of America... Patriotism, Protest and the Music That Made a Nation. It was a collaborative event by Pulitzer Prize winner John Meacham and Grammy Award winner Tim McGraw... a unique evening filled with in-depth discussions of our historic times lead by John with intermittent breaks of Tim singing an appropriate period song. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative celebration of America by exploring the origins of American music, tracing patriotic roots back to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, two World Wars, the beginnings of rock n' roll, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, all the way through the 21st century American struggles, including renewed allegiance to the United States after the attacks of 9/11. Tim McGraw's rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic by the abolitionist writer Julia Ward Howe and I'm Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood was the musical highlight of the evening.
