Charleston Strong

Since moving to Charleston in 2004, my wife Sue, and I, have been amazed by the people of Charleston. Never before had we met so many friendly and high character people.  Yes, we love all that Charleston has to offer; its beaches, the food, and the weather, but it is the people and community that make us so proud to call ourselves Charlestonians.  After the tragic shooting one year ago at Mother Emanuel AME, Charleston’s response made us even more proud to be part of such a special community.  During the toughest and most difficult of times, our cities’ character shined brighter than ever.  The strength of the community was highlighted many times, including when, family members of the victims stood in court and told the shooter, “I forgive you.”  It is hard for many to understand this forgiveness, but somehow those three words captured the city’s response.  I was amazed by how Charleston stayed strong and came together with acts of grace, displays of racial unity, and as thousands held hands across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. These acts of unity showed that we are truly, “Charleston Strong.”
