The Town's more recent history can be observed in the historic buildings, churches and cemeteries. These structures are an important part of the Town's charm and help maintain the small town, rural character of Awendaw. Each fall the Town of Awendaw holds the Blue Crab Festival, which features local blue crabs caught in the waters of the Town. The festival draws seafood lovers from the entire state to the Town to enjoy steamed or deep-fried blue crabs and other Lowcountry favorites, such as Frogmore Stew.
